About
Dr. Kari Whaley is a higher education executive whose work centers on building institutions that are financially sound, academically distinctive, and genuinely oriented toward the people they serve.
She currently serves as Chief Academic Officer at Vermont College of Fine Arts, a CalArts affiliate, where she leads all academic and administrative operations, shared faculty governance, and institutional strategy. In under two years, she led a full organizational restructuring that meaningfully strengthened the institution's financial position and built a new non-credit revenue portfolio through NECHE recognition.
A Central Florida native, Dr. Whaley brings deep civic and institutional roots to her leadership. She was awarded the Mellon Fellowship with the Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) Leadership Institute, was a James Madison Fellow at Georgetown University, and a 2026 participant in the CollegeVine Vineyard Residency, an invitation-only convening of fewer than 100 presidents and provosts on the future of AI in higher education.

Leadership
Entrepreneurial by nature
Dr. Whaley approaches institutional leadership with an entrepreneurial lens: building new programs, securing new revenue streams, and forging partnerships that strengthen sustainability without compromising mission.
Clear-eyed about the landscape
Financial pressure, AI disruption, demographic shifts, political headwinds. Dr. Whaley does not look away from what higher education is navigating. She builds strategies that address challenges directly, with honesty and with the institution's long-term health and student outcomes as the measure.
Centered on people
The best institutions are built around people: students who design their own paths, faculty who mentor with genuine expertise and care, and communities that hold each other accountable to shared values. That orientation shapes every decision Dr. Whaley makes, informed in part by her experience as a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200), with training grounded in accessible instruction.
Grounded in stewardship
Raised on a Central Florida cattle ranch, Dr. Whaley understands stewardship not as a concept but as a daily practice. She brings that long-term orientation to institutional leadership: patient, consistent, and built for what endures.
Scholarship
What does it take to guide someone all the way to the finish line?
Dr. Whaley's forthcoming book answers with data: survey responses from 255 students and recent graduates in professional degree programs, expanded with input from students across fine arts disciplines. It offers faculty and academic leaders a research-based framework for advising and supervision, built from real evidence rather than instinct.
The findings identify five themes that define effective advising, from engagement and feedback to emotional support and structure. Written for practitioners at every stage of their advising career.
